Discussion continues at the Legislature concerning how to rein in the cost of the TOPS Program. While most of us (according to a new poll) are against cutting back the number of dollars students get, another majority of those polled (57%) are for raising the standards needed to qualify.
Right now all students need is a 2.5 GPA and a minimum of 20 on the A.C.T. In essence an average student qualifies.
What we as a state have to come to grips with is whether or not we can afford to or whether or not we want to spend in excess of 200 million dollars a year to reward average students.
