Baton Rouge, La. - LSU junior pitcher Kurt McCune will miss at least the first month of the baseball season with a fractured vertebrae in his back, 104.5 ESPN's Charles Hanagriff reported.  McCune missed the season-opening sweep of Maryland with back spasms, but a CAT scan Tuesday revealed the fracture.

McCune earned Freshman All-American honors in 2011 after leading the staff with a 7-3 record in 14 starts with a 3.31 ERA.  In 21 appearances as a sophomore in 2012, mostly in relief, McCune posted a 3-4 record with a 4.04 ERA.

The news Tuesday was better regarding another veteran LSU pitcher.  Junior Nick Rumbelow threw a bullpen session at Alex Box Stadium without pain in the ailing oblique muscle that kept him out of the Maryland series.  Rumbelow is expected to make his season debut next week versus UL-Lafayette.
